October 7, 2006 09:46 - Dental Implant Research For Thailand Citizens In The News
In Thailand, research and science efforts are being directed to help it's citizens to have dental implants at lower costs.A new dental care project is set to find ways to develop local materials for dental implants to give patients cheaper access to dental treatment. The project started a year ago and it is said to have been successful, do far, in developing a prototype implant material that will help local people to have implants. Materials being used are titanium, a type of alloy, to make the implant. Titanium is a material that can be implanted inside the human body without causing any harm as proved by medical research and labs are being run to test the metal's toxicity. It's now in the process of being tested on animals.
In additon: The research team is developing analysis software to help oral surgeons plan the implantation. Normally, surgeons use their expertise to place the anchor, and many times errors have occurred. The director said the software would help the surgeons calculate a suitable position to place the anchor. Add to that a navigation system is also being developed to enable surgeons to make a more accurate implant. About 50 per cent of the development of the two systems has been completed and the team expects to complete the rest next year.
"We hope the development will be of real use in the commercial market in a few years," spokesman said.

July 31, 2006 09:37 - Jawbone Disease Among Cancer Patients Is Serious
Cancer patients taking widely used osteoporosis medications called bisphosphonates are in danger of contracting a serious side affect disease called osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis is a condition where the jawbone won't heal once it is exposed in invasive types of dentistry. The use of osteoporosis medications in cancer patients coupled with dental surgery has reported to result in this serious side affect disease.
If you are a person with cancer using bisphosphonates (taken intraveonsously in large doses) to help reduce bone pain, protect against overloads of calcium in the blood or help control malignancy that has spread to the skeleton then going off the drugs in the months before needed dental procedures is a prevention you can take. But, be sure to consult your physician regarding the contra-indications of dental surgery and high doses of bisphosphonates.
History: Doctors reported the first case in 2003, and since then about 400 instances have been described in medical journals. However, no one really knows how often it occurs

June 13, 2006 15:59 - Dental Surgery Support Was A Must
Keep this one in mind fellas......be there or be gone.Seems that a holloywood starlet had some serious dental surgery and when your boyfriend didn't present himself as a good support system after she had her wisdom teeth removed, she promplty broke off the romance.
The star is quoted as sayng, "I feel like if I'm sick, I need flowers. I'm very open about saying what I need from a partner, and he needs to meet those demands. I got my wisdom teeth pulled, and I guess maybe I expected a little bit more support. That was just the straw that broke the camel's back. If you're not going to be there for my wisdom teeth, you're not going to be there."
